John Aujay went for a trail run in 1998 in the Los Angeles desert and never came back. A member of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau, Aujay was a strong runner but his personal and professional lives were in rough shape — Aujay’s marriage was on the rocks and his department was slogging in the war against meth. Since his disappearance, theories ranging from suicide to murder at the hands of dealers — or worse, rubbed out by a corrupt member of his own department — have been been explored but nothing has ever stuck. Claire Martin penned the mysterious story for Los Angeles Magazine.
