The Once & Future Past

Predicting the future is for prophets and weathermen. But it turns out it’s also for sports writers. A 1991 cover story by William Oscar Johnson in Sports Illustrated made some bold predictions on the future of sports – in this case, 2001. Some of the predictions were prescient and not surprisingly, some missed wildly. One of the most intriguing misses was a premium service called “Common Huddle” in which fans vote on the play calling during NFL games – still a conceivable idea for the future in my view. Nick Greene did a round-up of all the the predictions for Mental Floss.
