Yoga is emerging as a competitive sport. Several events are popping up and USA Yoga — a non-profit that promotes competitive yoga — is petitioning to launch yoga as an Olympic sport. Competitive events, including a national championship are already popping up. Still, the idea of infusing competition into an otherwise relaxing activity is unappealing to many yoga devotees. And worse, the sexual assault case against Bikram Choudhary — a well-known yoga teacher and the father of Bikram yoga — is toxic to the sport because many of the poses used in competition are derived from Bikram. Vox reports on yoga’s uneasy competitive aspirations.
